My Interview with Author Phil Price

When did you first realize you wanted to become a Writer/author?

I first toyed with the idea of writing back in 2009. I typed up a few short stories on my pc, actually liking what I’d written. It kinda went from there really. I had the whiff of an idea in the back of my head. And hey presto, I started writing.

Where do you get your ideas for your book?

Well my first book, Unknown, came to life because of abductions. There are so many stories every year in the news about people all over the world who vanish without a trace. I thought I could put a dark, supernatural slant on it. I wanted to create a story where vampires from another dimension, come to Earth to snatch certain people. Twisted huh!

What kind of things do you enjoy when not writing?

I’m a father of two young boys. So when I’m not writing, I really enjoy those quiet few hours when they are asleep. Lol.
I also enjoy spending time with them when they are awake (mostly), escaping with my wife when we can find a sitter.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

So far I have written two. Unknown, and The Turning. The Turning is the sequel, which I loved writing. It’s has a bit of The Empire Strikes Back about it, if you know what I mean. But I’d have to say that Unknown is my favourite, purely because it’s my first baby.

Do you have any suggestions to help others who have a passion for writing?

Just go for it. Don’t doubt yourself. Your passion is fuelling your desire to do it. So do it. Yes, it might not be a work of art at first. That is where you can learn. Learn to write. Play around with words on a page. Be creative. Be bold. It may just be the best thing you ever do.

What do you think makes a great story?

Lots of different things. It’s like a great cake. I love cake btw. It has to have great ingredients. Plot, characters, emotion, love, sex, hurt, loss, betrayal, and action. If you can master the art of getting the balance right, you’re halfway there. Oh and vampires. Did I mention vampires?

Which Writer/Authors inspire you?

The usual suspects. King. Cussler. Clancy. However, since I started writing, I’ve delved into the Indie scene. There are so many great writers out there, crafting great stories, that are equal in standard to some of the big boys.
I’ve read many over the last year or so, but four really stand out as inspiring, as I’ve gotten to know a little bit about them away from just writing. Kelly Miles, G.S Tucker, Lanie Jacobs, and Rita Ames are all great writers who deserve some special recognition. Thank you to you all.

What are you working on at the moment?

Well, The Turning is in the editing stages, to be released in the next few months. I’m currently writing book three in the series, along with a sci-fi novel that is a standalone story.

What genre are your books?

I’d class them as kinda horror/fantasy. There is a touch of dystopian about them too.

What drew you to the genre you write?
Basically, Salem’s Lot. I was obsessed with it growing up. It’s one of my favourite books, and T.V miniseries. It got me hooked on vampires. The kind of vampires that I think should be written about. Foul dark creatures, who terrorise the innocent.

Which Actor/Actress would you like to see portraying the lead character from your most recent book?(any book you like)

I think James McAvoy would be a good shout for the character of Jake Stevenson.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

Part time I’m afraid. That mortgage isn’t going to pay itself. Lol.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

When you’re stuck on a chapter and you cannot seem to make it move. I’ve had that a few times. I’ve had to stop writing, sometimes for a week or so, to figure out in my head how it will play out.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded Writer’s block?

See above.

Do you read much, and if so who are your favorite Authors or genres?

I do read. I’m pretty open about genres now. Before, I opted to stick with a chosen few. But lately I’ve read romance novels, steamy novels, fantasy, and YA. It’s like being into horror movies, but suddenly you start watching chick flicks, and Game of Thrones..

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included?

My fee  Kidding. We’ll sort that out behind closed doors…

How can Readers discovery more about you and your work?
